When a challan check matters

Before you buy a used vehicle

Challans are recorded against the vehicle, not the driver. Unpaid ones can hold up the transfer of ownership and land on you.

Your own vehicle

Fines pile up quietly — a camera challan from months ago is easy to miss until it blocks a renewal or a sale.

A fleet you run

Taxis, delivery bikes, a family's three vehicles — one place to see what is outstanding across all of them.

What a check shows — and what it doesn't

A full challan history tells anyone where a vehicle has been, at what time, on which day. That is not something a stranger should be able to look up. So the check is split:

  • For any vehicle

How many challans are pending and what they total — enough to decide whether to walk away from a purchase.

  • For your own vehicle

The full record — offence, place, date and photograph — once you have verified that the vehicle is yours.

How it works

1

Enter the number

Any Indian plate — the same box that looks up registration details.

2

We query the records

The national e-challan system, plus the state systems that feed it.

3

See what's outstanding

How many challans are pending and what they add up to, in seconds.

Where the official record lives

The official record is the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways' e-challan system at echallan.parivahan.gov.in, and your state traffic police portal. ApniGaadi is an independent service, not affiliated with either — to pay a challan, or for anything legally binding, use the official channels.

Records can lag by a few days, and not every state system syncs at the same pace.

The three kinds of challan

They are not all settled the same way, and the difference decides whether you can deal with it online.

1

E-challan

The everyday one: issued electronically, usually by a traffic camera, under the Motor Vehicles Act. Over-speeding, jumping a signal, wrong-side parking. It can be paid online without anyone appearing anywhere.

2

Virtual court challan

Referred to a court, but handled online. You contest or settle it through the state's virtual court portal instead of attending in person. The e-challan record tells you when this applies.

3

Court challan

Issued for the serious offences — drink driving, dangerous driving, driving without a licence. These require a physical appearance and cannot be settled by paying online.

What happens if a challan goes unpaid

An unpaid challan does not quietly expire. It escalates, roughly in this order:

  1. 1
    Straight away

The challan is payable online at the stated amount. Nothing else happens yet.

  2. 2
    After a few weeks

Reminders are issued. The record stays open and continues to show against the vehicle.

  3. 3
    After a couple of months

Typically referred to a court or a virtual court. From here it stops being a simple online payment.

  4. 4
    Left longer

A summons can follow, and licence action becomes possible. The open record can also block a transfer or renewal.

The stages are consistent; the timings are not. How quickly a challan moves to court differs by state and by the offence, so treat the above as the shape of what happens rather than a fixed schedule — and check the official portal for your own case.

If a challan is wrong

Wrong plate readings and challans issued after a vehicle was sold both happen. There is a grievance process for it.

1

Open the official portal

Go to echallan.parivahan.gov.in — grievances are raised with the authority, not with us.

2

Find the grievance option

Enter the challan number or the vehicle number to bring up the record you are disputing.

3

Explain and attach proof

Sale papers if the vehicle was no longer yours, photographs, or anything showing the record is wrong.

4

Keep the reference number

It is the only way to follow the complaint up. Save it somewhere you will find it again.

One warning worth repeating: no private service can cancel a challan for you. Anyone charging a fee to make one disappear is lying. Some states run Lok Adalat drives where pending challans are settled at a reduced amount — that is done through the courts, free to apply for.

What does each offence cost?

Fines under the Motor Vehicles Act, with the section, what a repeat costs, and where your licence is at stake — for your state where it notifies its own.

Common questions

How do I check if a vehicle has pending challans?

Enter the vehicle registration number. Challan records are held in the national e-challan system run by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, along with individual state traffic police systems. You can also check directly at echallan.parivahan.gov.in.

Do unpaid challans transfer to the new owner of a vehicle?

Challans are recorded against the vehicle, so pending ones follow it and can block or complicate the transfer of ownership. Always check for outstanding challans before paying for a used vehicle.

Why does a challan I just received not show up?

Challans take time to reach the central records, and some state systems sync with a delay. A challan issued in the last few days may not appear yet. For anything time-critical, check the state traffic police portal as well.

Can I see the full details of someone else's challan?

No. For any vehicle we show only how many challans are pending and what they total. Full details — the offence, place, time and photograph — are shown only to a verified owner of that vehicle, because that information would otherwise reveal where a vehicle has been.

Is checking a challan free?

Yes, checking is free on ApniGaadi. Paying a challan is done through the official government channels.

What happens if a challan is never paid?

It does not lapse. An unpaid challan is normally referred to a court, after which a summons can be issued, and it can surface later as an obstacle when you renew, transfer or sell the vehicle. Exact timelines differ from state to state.

What is a virtual court challan?

Some challans are sent to a virtual court, which lets you contest or settle the matter online instead of appearing in person. The e-challan record will say so, and it links to the virtual court portal for that state.

The challan is not mine — the vehicle was sold. What do I do?

Challans attach to the vehicle, so one issued after a sale can still show against it if the transfer was never completed in the RTO records. Complete the transfer, keep the sale paperwork, and raise a grievance on the official e-challan portal with that proof.

Can a challan be reduced or waived?

Not by us, and not by any private service. Some states periodically run Lok Adalat settlement drives where pending challans can be compounded at a reduced amount. Anyone promising to have your challan cancelled for a fee is not telling you the truth.

Does a challan affect my insurance?

A challan is a traffic fine, not an insurance claim, so it does not directly change your premium. It matters indirectly: unpaid challans can hold up ownership transfer and are a red flag to a buyer.

How long does a challan take to appear online?

Usually a few days. Camera-issued challans reach the central records faster than ones written on the spot, and some state systems sync more slowly than others. If a challan you know about is missing, check again in a few days or look at the state portal.
